Chapter 1 Concepts and Cognitive Science
نویسنده
چکیده
Indeed, it's even controversial whether concepts are objects, as oPPosed to cognitive or behavioral abilities of some sort. Because of the scope of the issues at stake, it's inevitable that some disputes arise from radically different views of what a theory of concepts ought to achieve-differences that can be especially plonounced across discipiinary boundaries. Yet in spite of these differertces, there has been a significant amount of interdisciplinary interaction among theorists working on concepts. In this respect, the theory of concepts is one of the great success stories of cognitive science. Psychologists and linguists have borrowed freely from philosophers in develoPing detailed empirical theories of concepts, drawing inspiration from Wittgenstein's discussions of family resemblance, Frege's distinction between sense and reference, and Kripke's and Putnam's discussions of externalism and essentialism. And piilosophers have found psycJrologists' work on categorization to have powerful implications for a wide r*g" of philosophical debates. The philosopher Stephen Stich (1993) has gone so far as to remark that current empirical models in psychology undermine a traditional approach to philosophy in which philosophers engage in _co:rceptual analyses. As a .*"qrrence of this *ork Stich and others have come to believe !h{ philosophers have to rethink their approach to topics in areas as diverse as the philosophy of mind and ethics. So even if disciplinary boundaries have generated the appearance of dis;oint research, it's hard to deny that significant interaction has taken place. We hope this volume will underscore some of these achievements andopen the way for increased cooperation. In this introduction, we sketch the recent history of theories of concepts. However, our purpose isn't solely one of exposition. We also provide a number of reinteqpretations of what have come to be standard arguments in the field and develop a framework that lends more prominence to neglected areas

متن کاملChapter 1 Introduction to Cognitive Systems
The chapter reviews some historical and recent trends in understanding natural and developing artificial cognitive systems. One of the fundamental concepts of cognitive science, i.e. mental representation, is discussed. The two main directions, symbolic and connectionist (and their combination: hybrid) architectures are analysed. Two main cognitive functions, memory and language are specificall...
متن کاملThe Case Against Cognitive Phenomenology
The goal of this chapter is to mount a critique of the claim that cognitive content (that is, the kind of content possessed by our concepts and thoughts) makes a constitutive contribution to the phenomenal properties of our mental lives. We therefore defend the view that phenomenal consciousness is exclusively experiential (or nonconceptual) in character. The main focus of the chapter is on the...
متن کاملCausatives and the empty lexicon: A minimalist perspective
What is the constitution of the meaning of morphemes (lexical concepts)? According to most theories, such meanings have a molecular or holistic internal structure: prototypes, exemplars, semantic networks, complex schemata, scripts, and even classical definitions. Recently, however, contrary opinions have arisen in cognitive science suggesting that lexical concepts are not semantically structur...
متن کاملEvaluation of Mathematical Cognitive Functions with the Use of EEG Brain Imaging
During the last decades, the interest displayed in neurocognitive and brain science research is relatively high. In this chapter, the cognitive neuroscience field approach focuses in the aspect of the way that cognitive functions are produced by neural circuits in the brain. Within this frame, the effects of impairment to the brain and subsequent changes in the thought processes due to changes ...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Adaptive and Evolutionary Fuzzy Cognitive Maps
Fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) represent the decision process in the form of a graph that is usually easy to interpret and, therefore, can be applied as a convenient decision-support tool. In the first part of this chapter, we explain the motivations for the research on FCMs and provide a review of the research in this area. Then, as stated in the title of the chapter, we concentrate our attention...
